Growth mindset vs Fixed mindset

This idea of growth mindset and fixed mindset was developed by psychologist Carol Dweck and popularized in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. According to Dweck, Mindset is a "self theory" that people think about themselves. A simple example is are you intelligent or not.

Dweck says that in fixed mindset, people believe basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. People with fixed mindset spend there time with documenting their talents or intelligence rather than developing it. They are the believer who think talent can create a success without taking any effort. They have a goal to become smart and never dumb. They avoid challenges and get easily threatened by others success. In simple words fixed mindset is when the intelligence is fixed.

On other hand, Dweck says that in Growth mindset, people believe that intelligence and talent can be improved through hard work and efforts. People with Growth mindset believe that they can learn more or become much smarter. They look for people who challenge them more. They take inspiration from others success. They have a zeal to learn and conquer. They take efforts to build new skills. The person who have growth mindset, is a person who is on right track to success.

Fixed mindset is limiting
  • Failure is the limit of my abilities

  • I don't like to be challenged

  • When I'm frustrated, I give up

  • Tell me I'm smart

  • fixed abilities

  • Give up easily

  • Threatened by others success

  • Ignore feedback

Growth mindset is freedom
  • Failure is an opportunity to grow

  • Look for people who challenge them

  • Never give up

  • I like to try new things

  • Learn from feedbacks

  • Inspired by others success

  • Build abilities

  • I can learn anything I want to

In her book, Mindset : Carol Dweck, describes the two mindsets :-

"When you enter a mindset, you enter a new world. In one world--the world of fixed traits--success is about proving you're smart or talented. Validating yourself. In the other--the world of changing qualities--it's about stretching yourself to learn something new. Developing yourself".

5 effective way to shift from Fixed mindset to Growth mindset

Dweck says just learning about growth mindset can lead you to a big change. Knowing the difference between a growth and fixed mindsets gives you a new alternative. So without waiting, let's begin to explore ways to shift Fixed mindset to Growth mindset:-

Shift the language you use

The ways we speak with ourselves has a huge impact in our mindset. When we start learning something we come out with lots of questions, like - Am I smart enough to learn something new, Would it be difficult for me to learn, Will I do good in this , Is it easy. This is where we need to decide whether you will use growth mindset or fixed mindset and need to choose the correct path.

So, The first step for developing mindset is to shift your language use, like :-

Instead of saying,

  • I can't do this

  • I hate feedback

  • I don't have potential to do this

  • I hate it

Say,

  • I can do this

  • I love feedback

  • I have potential to do this

  • I love it

Set goals

Stat setting learning goals which shows some worth. Set goals which shows learning and is daily based, Example :- I will practice daily for football, I will do math daily, I will start my diet and more.

Goals should be set to show improvement. A goal showed have small steps, Because small steps is right direction which ends up being the biggest step in life. The small step helps use to create small continuous improvement and creates and motivation within our mind.

Take advantage of your failures.

Failure is something which teaches us lessons to learn from our experiences. Usually people often get scared of word "failure" and always give up, which shows a negative mindset and distress in mind, but the real thing you should do is take advantage of this, by reviewing it, by founding the mistake, by researching about how to improve and more. So you should try making a plan to improve it. Apply different strategies which can lead you to the correct direction and can make this better. You should start learning and make this an opportunity to grow.

Get feedback

Try to get feedback of your work, So you can get points where you need to work and improvise in yourself. You should take advantage of feedback and work over it. It gives a motivation to keep going. Feedback is important to know where to work to do much better than before.

Be regular

You can not shift to growth mindset in a day. It takes a regular practice. You need to consist and flexible to your work and mindset. After achieving your goals you can compare yourself by your past behaviour. Like what was your perspective to your work, which mindset did you choose, How was your performance at past. This will help you to summarize how you eventually improved in your goal and will help you to develop more strategies to adopt growth mindset.

So be consistent and regular to achieve the goal.

The benefits of growth mindset

Study of Dweck predicts that growth mindset has a huge impact on motivation and learning.

Recent research has shown that student success in exams is not only dependent on revision strategies they employ but also their mindset. A student of middle school studied on impact of fixed versus growth mindsets which gave him an achievement in math, which is one of the most challenging subject for students. A growth mindset focuses students on learning, rather than simply performing well.

Examples of fixed vs growth mindsets

Now let's explore some examples where we will compare perspective of growth and fixed mindset.

1.) 'I already know everything' vs 'I know there is more to learn'

This example clearly state that the first statement used is fixed because it shows limitation and has a boundary which he think not to conquer. Whereas, the second statement clearly display growth mindset as it shows freedom and goal for learning.

So this easily concludes how a fixed mindset and a growth mindset thinks.

2.)'I hate feedback' vs 'Feedback is a way to learn where I need to improve'

Feedback is something which can be positive or negative. If a feedback has a negative or unfair mean. Then its common to feel disturbed and sorrow, but its important to take a step and try to judge where you got wrong and where to improve. Feedback will help to reflect and will encourage to improve. Now that's what a growth mindset is.

3.)'I am too old to learn' vs 'It's never too late to learn

There is no age to learn. Age is just a number which never stops you to learn. Your work is just to find opportunity and learn.

4.)'I get threatened by others success' vs 'I find inspiration from others success'

People who get inspired by others success are ones who are on right direction to success. Your job is to track or to know the way he took to achieve it and try to follow his guidance, this is growth mindset perspective. A person with a fixed mindset will always get threatened and will never get the direction towards success.

There are many real life example of fixed mindset and growth mindset, but it's your job to see whether to choose fixed mindset or growth mindset.

Summary

In summary, a fixed mindset is limitation which stops you to expand your knowledge, whereas growth mindset is freedom where you can earn unlimited knowledge.
